Referrals to Targeted Team

Each school needs to develop a process of identifying those students who are not responding to Universal PBIS and referring them to the Targeted Team for additional supports.

An effective referral process includes a review of behavioral data, completion of a clear and concise referral form and the development of a flowchart that details the procedure and timeframes for managing the referral.

In general, referrals to the Targeted Team come from the Universal team based on a review of student data from SWIS or another tracking database. In some cases, teachers may refer a student directly to the Targeted Team. There should, however, be some assurance that the teacher is following universal protocols and submitting office referral data appropriately on this and other students.

The role of the Targeted Team should be well defined and understood. Both team members and the faculty as a whole should be able to articulate what the team's mission is and how it differs from the Universal team, from intensive level interventions that are beyond the scope of the Targeted Team and from other student-centered teams such as IEP teams.
